What's the difference between astral projection and sleep paralysis?

Question by Paulala: What's the difference between astral projection and sleep paralysis?
Many times my body has fallen asleep but my mind has stayed awake and i can see inside of my room with my eyes closed. Another time i was at my uncles in another country, i heard them snoring and was in the room i used to sleep in when i was there... what do you define these as?

The difference is that one is a real physiological phenomenon, and the other it not real.

  2. Sleep paralysis is a medically authenticated state during sleep where the person feels absolutely immobile - totally unable to move in the bed (whilst dreaming) and it is invariably a terrifying feeling.

    Astral projection is supposed to be a deliberate dislocating of the spirit from the body in order for the spirit to travel freely, sometimes miles away.

    I have never experienced either state, so all I will do is copy this answer from a person on Yahoo, years ago, saying what happened to him when he tried astral projection;

    From John Waltz: i have had this happen several times. i remember one which was very interesting.-i was going up into the sky, i kepk going until i could see the entire earth. then a voice said to me; if you go any farther you will not be able to go back. http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20111213035409AArRdCv

    In view of what the Bible says in Ecclesiastes chapter 12, you should be advised not to try what John tried. Please read that last chapter in the Old Testament book of Ecclesiastes to understand about your spirit, and your silver cord being broken at death. And how you will have to give an account to God for the way you have lived your life on earth.

  3. When dreaming, there is a well understood mechanism in the brain that paralysis the major muscles. There are text books which describe it in detail. Sometimes it stops working - so a few people sleep walk. Occasionally, someone becomes half awake while the paralysis is still happening, so they notice it. That is called sleep paralysis. Many people this happens to, not understanding what is happening, fall into a panic and start struggling until they wake up. It is possible for them to learn to relax when this happens, which gets rid of the fear.

    If you are dreaming and know that you are dreaming, that is called a lucid dream. Most people that happens to find it enjoyable. If you have a lucid dream of flying out of your body, it is called astral projection. I have experienced it many times. Unlike many people who experience this, I do not believe I am literally leaving my body.

    Sleep paralysis and astral projection are different things, but occasionally they happen together.
