  1. apnea is when he stops breathing for 8 seconds or longer. If it's less than that, it's normal and nothing to worry about. There are a few different causes of it, there's milk apnea caused by the casomorphins in cows milk (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21478761 http://nutritionfacts.org/video/cows-milk-induced-infant-apnea/ ) so if that's it cutting dairy out of your own diet can help so there's only the casomorphins your own body produces in your breastmilk and not the casomorphins from any cows milk as well, underdeveloped lungs and a few other causes, many of which are unknown. It can be systemic and be there for life and later in life associated with snoring and for that in children they like to remove adenoids or tonsils, but I would be hesitant to do so because of the role the tonsils play in the human immune system and as of yet we don't really know enough of what adenoids do in terms of keeping us healthy.

  2. Its not that he stopped breathing. What is happening is he is still learning how to coordinate between breathing and sucking so it sounds like he is gasping because he is reminding himself to breathe which sucking but in a way that he will not inhale his milk.
