I think that is what happened to Heath Ledger. I think that the sleeping pills combined with the lack of sleep made him to droggy to roll over or wake up. Perhaps the "snoring" that was heard was him gurgling or grasping for air.
I have also heard of someone else dying in their sleep after eating a big meal and getting sick. Her husband was sleeping right next to her.
So how can someone vomit in their sleep and not wake up? Is it possible? Could it be something else?

ReplyDeleteYes, it's possible. I don't think this is what happened to Heath Ledger because it would have shown up on the autopsy.
ReplyDeleteThat's called aspiration of gastric contents, and it doesn't usually happen in normal people, because we have protective airway reflexes that prevent it. If you're sleeping, and dinner refluxes and gets close to your vocal cords, you'll cough it out of the way.
ReplyDeleteHowever, if you're drunk, stoned, anesthetized , or have neurological or muscular dysfunction, you might lose those protective airway reflexes. (That's why you can't eat or drink before anesthesia).
If Heath Ledger had aspirated, the autopsy would have found stomach contents in his lungs. (That's how Jimi Hendrix died)
The sleeping pills were more likely to have caused him to stop breathing, as most of those drugs depress respiration. Overdose is usually from respiratory arrest.

ReplyDeleteYes it is possible. Most of the time people who vomit in there sleep will wake up or react in a way that will prevent them from dieing. They may still choke from the vomit, but dieing is rare, whoever possible. If we have intervened in some way with the bodies natural responses (like with pills or alcohol) then we could indeed die from our own vomit. Is this what happened to Heath as you stated...could be.
