How do I force myself to sleep on left side only?

Question by : How do I force myself to sleep on left side only?
I want to sleep on my left side only. If I sleep on my right side, I always wake up with neck and shoulder pain and often a mild migraine-like headache (which has been severe a few times). I use a Sobakawa pillow and that is a great pillow but still nothing stops that right side problem. Ideally, I'd love to sleep on my back, but that just doesn't happen. I go to sleep on the left side and always wake up turned over to the right. Any suggestions?

If your bed is against the wall then sleep with your back on the wall.
If your bed isn't then try moving it with help*

  1. Well, I have similar problems. For me it happens for insomnia. So what I do is try to not think while sleeping. I utter in my mind a single rhythmical word and i breath a lot to provide Oxygen in my body. This way i sleep very fast and now i don't have this pain.
If you provide Oxygen to your body and give a comfortable condition, it doesn't matter which side you sleep.
My knowledge is limited, so you should make a check up may be there is some problem in your body.
Sorry for my English. I'm from Bangladesh, English is not my M.T.

  2. You can sew 2 or 3 small pockets onto the parts of your bed clothing that you don't want to sleep on. The pockets need to be sewn shut so yes the marbles will be going through the laundry but that doesn't cause any problems at all.

Could be you have something going on life sleep apnea or sleep hypopnea if on your back so you inherently won't stay in that position because it causes breathing issues.

To me it seems like putting the marbles on your right side is the best idea. Put them on your trunk wherever you are certain your body would be touching the bed during sleep on that side - likely the hip.

Some folks put marbles on their backs because they snore when sleeping on their back - hence garnering vocal disappointment from significant others. :)

  3. Try tying a ball around your back and side. Some doctors prescribe this for patients that sleep on their stomach (bad for your back) so you might be able to find something in a pharmacy like a brace. This will keep you from rolling over, especially mid-sleep. Since the ball or brace will make sleeping on your right side uncomfortable you'll feel more comfortable sleeping on your left side. Hope this helps!

  4. Your body actually 'knows' that you should sleep on the left because it's much better for the stomach. Put a long pillow in your bed so that you can't easily roll to the right. Also can you arrange your bed so that you can only get out on the Left and have that where your bedside things are too. The other suggestions are all good... ball, unfomfortable objects, bed against the wall etc.
Apart from that... adopt a Greyhound who has a snarky disposition to being woken up and that sleeps on top of the right side of your bed ;-)
